How to Find Great Service in Houston

by Sr. Editor on September 17, 2008

Moving to the city of Houston can be the beginning of an exciting adventure. From enjoying Houston apartments, to exploring museums, to fantastic shopping venues and much more, becoming a resident of this great city is sure to change your life forever.

But many other changes take place when moving to a new location – and some of these changes might seem like complete hassles. For example, that spectacular hair stylist that you’ve gone to loyally for ten years – who will replace her? Or the dentist that knows the sensitive spot on your upper bicuspid? Where will you find another like him?

It’s true, you typically don’t find these kind of referrals in your company’s relocation information packet– you are more often than not left to fend for yourself. But don’t despair – you are not alone! If you are proactive, and ask the people around you for a referral, you will eventually find replacements for all of the professionals and services that you left behind.

Co-workers, for example, are a great source for medical or dental-related recommendations. Since many insurance plans have a fixed list of select doctors or dentists, take a poll in the office and see if you can determine which are the best health-care providers covered by your insurance plan. Co-workers can also undoubtedly fill you in on the best nearby lunch spots, as well as car mechanics, banks and stores that are close to work.

Another invaluable resource for recommendations: neighbors. Not only is canvassing neighbors a great way to find out where to go – it’s also the perfect ice breaker. Ask neighbors for their opinions of local “best bets” for services such as dry cleaning, fitness centers, restaurants and the like.

And, unless you are painfully shy, don’t rule out asking complete strangers for references. If you are in the mall and see a woman with a killer haircut, ask who does her hair! More personal references may take some time. If you have children, go to a neighborhood park and strike up a conversation with other parents. This is the best way to find out about area daycare providers and preschools.

New acquaintances are also a wonderful way to find out about area churches, schools, after school programs and other important establishments for your family. Moving to the city of Houston might mean finding everything from a new doctor to a new lawn service – but don’t worry. Ask the right questions – of co-workers, neighbors and even total strangers – and you are sure to get the inside scoop on great service in Houston.
