1. Galveston Island

Even though it’s not in the city, Galveston Island is close enough to spend either a day or the weekend for Labor Day. Go to one of the free beaches, visit the Strand, or just walk along the seawall. Bring a cooler full of food and then prepare to enjoy a day in the sun and surf.

2. Memorial Park

If Galveston Island seems like too far a trip to be included on your list of things to do for Labor Day, consider visiting Memorial Park. Bring a picnic, bikes or rollerblades, and friends and family for a fun, inexpensive day of relaxing. The park is beautiful and offers several places to eat and entertain.

3. Hermann Park

Another great park to visit is Hermann Park. Located right by the Houston Zoo, you can bring a picnic and enjoy the ambiance of the park and museum district, which is found nearby.

4. Bayou City Outdoors

If being outside sounds like a fun way to spend Labor Day, check out Bayou City Outdoors for a list of fun, inexpensive things to do. From rollerblading to hiking, you can find something fun for the family or a group of friends to do for the weekend.

5. Lounge by the Pool

If you live in one of the fabulous Houston apartments, you have a pool at your beck and call. Enjoy a last dip in the pool or bbq. Consider having some neighbors meet by the pool and throw a Labor Day party. Or, ask your apartment complex to sponsor a Labor Day party (if they’re not already). If you live in a complex with a lot of families, make sure there’s plenty to do for both adults and kids.

Holiday Weekend Tips

  • Update yourself on local water and boating safety laws.
  • Pack foods that may spoil in coolers to avoid food poisoning at outdoor picnics.
  • Obey traffic laws and drive defensively on holiday weekends to avoid accidents.
  • Remember to bring sunscreen and bug repellent for outdoor activities.
  • If your plans include the outdoors, make backup plans in case the weather doesn’t cooperate

Labor Day in Houston is a chance to say goodbye to summer as we usher in the fall. The three day weekend is filled with fun, inexpensive outings that can be enjoyed by the whole family. Whether you’re staying at home and lounging by the pool, going to a local park or having a party at one of the many Houston apartments, Labor Day is a holiday meant to be enjoyed with family and friends alike.
