Apartment Essentials For Entertaining

by Sr. Editor on August 26, 2008

When it comes to party planning, the smartest thing you can do to cover all your bases and not completely lose your mind is to make a list. Carry around the list like it is essential to life itself, jot down ideas, and (most importantly) cross off items as you complete them.

Not sure where to begin? Well, head out of Houston apartments and you’ll find a host of retail locations that will guarantee easy entertaining. From party planning professionals to the dollar store, you can find whatever you need no matter what your budget.

Tips To Get Started…

Now let’s get a start on this list by thinking of some important details that party throwers often don’t remember until the last minute. Ask yourself these questions as you prepare for your shindig:

1. Where will my guests sit? If you live in Houston apartments, you may not have a ton of space for 12-seater sectionals and the like. This is where you need to call in some favors. Borrow folding chairs or seating from your neighbors (unless, of course, they aren’t invited). Think outside of the box and use ottomans and sturdy end tables as seating options. If there simply isn’t enough room for everyone to have a seat, be sure to pay attention to the layout of the main room where the party will take place. Make sure there is as much open space as possible for your guests to stand around and chat without experiencing claustrophobia.

2. What will my guests use to eat? If you are serving small hors d’oeuvres, chances are you can get away with cocktail picks. But it you are serving anything more substantial, be sure to set out enough silverware for each guest (and then some). Don’t be too proud to use plastic – especially if your crowd will be large – if you must have metal, consider purchasing a few cheap sets at a local discount store.

3. What will my guests drink from? Unless you are throwing an extremely elegant dinner party, plastic will be fine here. Spring for the better quality plastic, smaller size for wine and cocktails, larger for beer and soft drinks. And if you have furniture that you want to preserve, buy a mega pack of cardboard coasters. They are super cheap, and will save you the stress of watching your furniture warp before your eyes.

4. What will my guests do? At most larger parties, you don’t need to plan any activities in which your guests will participate – but no matter how many guests are attending – have music. Taking the time to burn a CD that is appropriate to the event will insure that you will set the right ambiance for your party. And you can always get the party going with karaoke!

5. And finally … how are you gonna clean up this mess? The best offense is a good defense – set up a few extra garbage cans in a corner or two – with a separate bin for recycling of glass or plastic. Keep some stain stick handy in case a guest or two gets clumsy with the red wine – treating a spot immediately will help keep it from setting and allow you to continue enjoying your party.

Sure, there will be a million other items on your list, but these should get you heading in the right direction. Planning a party is a lot of work, indeed – but once you’ve mastered the essentials of how to host a party, the rewards you’ll reap will be well worth all of your efforts.
