Moving into apartments in Houston can be exciting– but many people often find that a small apartment is often lacking in dining space. If the dining area in your place is tiny, and you don’t want to end up sitting on your sofa in front of a TV tray every night, you’d do well to pay attention to these decorating tips from seasoned interior designers:

1. Buy furniture for small spaces

If the only table you have is huge, trade it in for something more appropriate for your space. Nothing makes a place look smaller than a hulking horizontal plane in the middle of it. A small dining table, perhaps a bistro table, for example, is a great alternative for a miniscule dining space. A pub table is another fantastic choice
. The height of the table gives it more presence, but the space these take up is minimal. Placed in a corner, these types of tables can easily be pulled out to accommodate a few more or provide a handy place to set hors d’oeuvres or drinks while entertaining.

2. Choose furniture that can do double duty

If your apartment doesn’t afford you the luxury of office space, be sure to select a table that will be able to double as a desk for your computer. Another great idea – tables and benches that offer hidden storage. A nice narrow sideboard or console table is another great storage idea – and its top can serve as a buffet area or a station for communication and organization of papers and bills.

3. Put it away

Whenever possible for your small apartment, buy pieces that can be folded up and put away. A few extra folding chairs, for example, can be slid beneath a bed – and bargain furniture giant IKEA also offers fold-up dining tables that are mounted to the wall, yet somehow still manage to look stylish.

4. Jazz it up

Remember that details are everything. A dinner guest won’t notice the size of your dining space if you infuse it with charm. A few carefully chosen framed prints, a small vase of flowers, candles, relaxing music and soft lighting will set the mood that you want.

No matter what time of day, breakfast, lunch or dinner, with a little imagination you can create a noshing nook in your small apartment. Don’t let the lack of space discourage you – there are plenty of options in both furniture and design for even the tiniest of dining spaces.
