Houston apartments come in all shapes and sizes, but if you are lucky enough to have a patio or deck attached to your home, you have the good fortune of being able to design an outdoor space.

Outdoor spaces can be vibrant and exciting, or warm and inviting, or peaceful and cozy. Using creative outdoor decor, outdoor furniture and a variety of accessories, you can create a space that can fill all of your needs.

How much can I afford?

The first thing you want to do when planning your outdoor space (just as when you plan an indoor space) is to figure out your budget. Whether your budget is minuscule or whopping, there are plenty of options out there.

What type of space do I want to create?

Once you know how much you have to spend, do some thinking. Just what do you want to use the space for? Do you long for a quiet space to snuggle up and read? Do you need a space in which to entertain? Different spaces call for different décor, so plan accordingly. Let’s look at what you’ll need, based on what you want:

A cozy oasis: If your patio or deck is small, and you want a place to kick back and relax, consider one of two comfortable outdoor chairs where you can sit and read, drink coffee, or chat with a friend. Outdoor furniture need not be expensive. Even an inexpensive director’s chair can be dressed up with some colorful pillows and a throw. Once you’ve got your chairs, search for a small table where you can put up your feet and set your novel and drink. You don’t need much to make a functional space. As far as accessories go, stick with something simple and durable. Potted plants can make a corner table pop, and an outdoor clock or thermometer can add beauty to your walls.

Party central: If you want to turn your patio or deck into a happening hotspot where friends can come and hang out – remember that seating is everything. You can pick up benches for relatively cheap at a hardware store, simply add some pillows or cover with blankets to make them more comfortable. You also might consider adding a stereo system with speakers that can be brought inside easily or stored in a weather proof container when not in use. If you have space for a barbeque, go ahead buy one. It’s true, Houston apartments are never far from world-class barbeque, but there’s nothing like homemade. Find some tasty recipes online and serve your friends some finger-lickin’ treats.

A Little Inspiration to Get You Started…

Figuring out what you want out of your deck or patio is easy – and shopping for outdoor décor and accessories can be fun. Make the most of your Houston apartment’s outdoor space – now get outside and enjoy!
